Her ligg både ein styrke og ei svakheit i materiala.

Nokon med like mønster, men ikkje heilt like.

I sitt kunstnarskap tek Bysheim utgangspunkt i eige levd liv.

Welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday, June 1st 2023 from 6 – 8 pm.

The exhibition Snunad is an installation consisting of several sculptural works made of rubber hoses, wool and metal. The metal frames provide a foundation for the rubber hoses. Filled with air, they coil, twist and stretch to the ceiling and walls.

The word snunad stems from the Old Norse snúnaðr, meaning a turning, an upheaval, a change of direction or a movement. Else Karin Tysse Bysheim explores the relationship between industrial and natural materials. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

The air in rubber hosing is unpredictable. There is an inhalation and exhalation, just as in living beings. Sometimes the air gets blocked. It can stay in place, or it can leak and cause the visual expression to change. By using these materials, the artist communicates a range of feelings, for instance peacefulness, disquiet, strength and weakness. The works can suggest something happening in an individual’s psyche, but also a more collective feeling shared by many people in the world.

Some of the sculptures are covered with drawn patterns. Bysheim considers these as protective symbols. After trips to South Africa and fishing in Norwegian fjords, she noticed similarities in the patterns on the skin of leopards and codfish. She has worked imaginatively with these impressions, creating what now appears like a family whose members have diverse personalities. Some have similar patterns but are not identical. Some are inflated, some stretched to the maximum. Some are quiet while others make powerful noises. Some are restless, others are still.

The starting point for Bysheim’s artistic practice is her own lived life and the things that trigger memories.

Working with rubber hoses and metal takes me mentally back to my childhood home. The yard around our house was filled with metal and concrete. Trucks came and went. I have a memory from when I was three years old: fear. My father was working, huge dump trucks were driving towards us, the biggest wheels I’ve ever seen, the world stopped turning, I stopped, my breathing stopped.

Else Karin Tysse Bysheim (b. 1959) lives and works on the island of Osterøy near Bergen. She studied at (a selection) the National College of Art and Design in Bergen, the university-college Høgskulen i Bergen, the institute for art therapy at UCL University College in Denmark, and the cultural academy Vestnorsk kulturakademi in Voss. Previous solo shows have been at (a selection) Halsnøy kloster (2022), Kvassheim lighthouse ‘On the Edge’ (2018), La Casa Amarilla, Málaga, Spain (2018) and Osterøy Museum (2010).
