Utstillingen Folding a Square av Hans Edward Hammonds er en installasjon med interaktive tekstilverk, tre og betongskulpturer. De siste årene har Hammonds jobbet med ulike måter å overføre sin relasjonelle og deltagerbaserte kunstpraksis om til interaktive og materialbaserte uttrykk. I denne utforskningen har tekstil blitt et sentralt material på grunn av sine transformative evner. Tekstilets uttrykk vil alltid preges av formene det omslutter.

De tekstilbaserte kunstverkene kan fungere som plagg, slik at du som betrakter kan se foldene og strukturene i de sydde verkene. Slik kan du lage skulpturer rundt din egen kropp og betrakte dem i store speil i galleriet. Hvert verk har individuelle kvaliteter som best kan oppdages ved å røre og flytte på dem. 

I utstillingen finner man også en serie treskulpturer som verkene er drapert på og rundt. Disse skulpturene har andre former enn menneskekroppen og gir nye skulpturelle muligheter. De tilbyr også en måte å leke og eksperimentere med tekstilkunsten. Kunstneren ønsker seg et nysgjerrig og aktivt publikum som interagerer med verkene. Dette er en utstilling som du kan ta på, forandre, kle på deg og eksperimentere i. 

I sitt kunstnerskap utforsker Hammonds samarbeid, samhandling og deltagelse. Han er interessert i samspillet mellom enkeltdeler og en ny helhet. Kjernen er spørsmål om hvordan mange små ting kan bli noe større, hvordan en kan gjøre noe sammen, samtidig som hvert individ eller element får rom til å uttrykke sine individuelle kvaliteter. 

Hans Edward Hammonds (f. 1983) er en norsk og new zealandsk kunstner, utdannet med Master i Fine Arts fra Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland) i New Zealand. De siste årene har Hammonds ledet relasjonelle prosjekter og forskning rundt deltagelse og kunstproduksjon med barn på skoler, institusjoner og kunstnerstyrte visningssteder. Han har vist prosjekter og installasjoner på Nasjonalmuseet, Høstutstillingen, Vestlandsutstillingen og Stavanger Kunstmuseum, samt gjennomført interdisiplinære kunstprosjekter internasjonalt. Som del av hans kunstnerskap er han også med på driften av det kunstneriske visningsrommet Velferden i Sokndal.

Folding a Square, by Hans Edward Hammonds, is an installation with interactive textile works and sculptures made of wood and concrete. In recent years Hammonds has explored different ways to transfer his relational and participation-based artistic practice to interactive and material-based expressions. In the process, textiles have become important materials due to their transformative qualities. The expression of a textile will always be affected by the form it envelopes.

The textile-based works in the exhibition reveal their folds and structures and can function as clothing. As such, you can make sculptures around your own body and then view them in the large mirror in the gallery. Each work has distinctive qualities that can best be discovered when they’re touched and moved around.

In the exhibition you can also find wooden sculptures around which the works are draped. Because these forms differ from those of the human body, they offer new sculptural possibilities. They also enable you to play and experiment with the textile works. The artist wants you to be curious and active and to interact with the works. This is an exhibition you can touch, change, dress yourself in, and experiment with.

In his artistic practice, Hammonds explores collaboration, interaction and participation. He is interested in the interaction between individual parts and a new whole. At the core of this research is the question of how lots of small things can become one larger thing, how people can make something together at the same time as each individual or element has room to express its own individual qualities.

Hans Edward Hammonds (b. 1983) has a background from both Norway and New Zealand. He earned a master’s degree in fine art from Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland). In recent years he has led relational art projects and research projects on participation and art production with children in schools, institutions and artist-led exhibition venues. He has presented projects and installations at the National Museum in Oslo, Norway’s annual Autumn Exhibition, the West Norway Exhibition, and Stavanger Art Museum. He has also done international interdisciplinary projects. As part of his practice, he has also helped run ‘Velferden’ – an exhibition space in Sokndal.
