I utstillingen Between One and the Next vises arbeider fra tre unge kunstnere som på hver sin måte bearbeider og finner forbindelser mellom farge, repetisjon, sanser og minne fra et tekstilt utgangspunkt. Jara Marken, Magdalena Kotkowska og Kristen Keegan bringer alle med seg en nysgjerrighet i møte med tekstile prosesser, og utforsker taktile kvaliteter og sanselighet gjennom å manipulere, skape og re/dekonstruere tekstilet.
Felles for dem alle er at de arbeider med metoder de selv ikke har full kontroll over – der veien mot et ukjent resultat er motivasjonen og drivkraften i arbeidet. Gjennom farging, veving og fletteteknikker jobber de tett på sitt valgte materiale, hvorvidt det er plantesanking eller ulike tekstiler, plantefarging eller syntetisk farging. Hver enkelt kunstners arbeider har I dette tilfellet latt seg forme av hverandre og av SOFT galleri som utstillingssted.
Between One and the Next viser til henders arbeid og repetisjon som en kunnskapsmetode. For kunstnerne skaper den trinnvise arbeidsmetoden tanker og former som ikke ville vært mulig med strikt forhåndsplanlegging. Dermed blir tekstilet en måte å oppdage og koble tlfeldigheter og intensjon, og bygge bro mellom fortid og nåtid.

The exhibition Between One and the Next presents new work by three young artists who, each in their own way, work with repetition, colour, sense, and memory using textiles as a framework. Jara Marken, Magdalena Kotkowska and Kristen Keegan each bring a curiosity to textile processes, exploring the tactility of the handmade through the manipulation, creation, and de/re-construction of cloth.
Common to all three artists is that they work with methods that cannot be fully controlled. The path toward unexpected and unknown results is often a driving force of the work. Through dyeing, weaving, and plaiting techniques they work closely with their chosen materials, which include foraged plants, synthetic and natural dyes, and fabrics of different qualities. In this case they have developed entirely new projects that take each other– and SOFT galleri– into consideration.
Between one and the next addresses the work of the hands as a way of thinking, and repetition as a generative approach. For each artist, a step-by-step method produces thoughts and forms that could not exist via premeditation or planning. Thus the textile medium becomes a site of discovery, a linking of chance and intention, and a bridge between past and present.
