Velkommen til Klara Pousette sin utstilling noia på SOFT galleri fra torsdag 14. januar 2021.
Merk: På grunn av de midlertidige Covid-19-tiltakene i Oslo blir det ikke holdt åpningsarrangement for denne utstillingen. Torsdag 14. januar er SOFT galleri åpent fra kl. 13.00 – 18.00. Deretter følger vanlige åpningstider. Antall besøkende er begrenset til seks personer samtidig.
Klara Pousette tar utgangspunkt i det tekstile håndverkets kvinnepolitiske symbolverdi. I noia viser hun en serie broderte arbeider. Broderi har historisk blitt ansett som en kvinnesyssel, og som en målestokk på hvor feminin og dydig en kvinne var. En kvinne som satt taus og broderte var en god kvinne.
Pousette har dekket tøystykker med håndbroderte sting, der selve arbeidsprosessen er det interessante. Hun ønsker å skape en kontrast mellom den fysiske utførelsen og innholdet i verkene, som ofte handler om kvinnelighetens baksider. Hennes egen depresjon og en personlig undersøkelse av meditasjonsteknikken ‘mindfulness’ har vært sentralt i prosjektet.
«När min fastlege frågade om jag hade provat yoga och mindfulness för att bota min nedstämdhet blev jag överraskad, jag trodde inte att mindfulness användes inom sjukvården. Mindfulness handlar om att du fokuserar på att vara medveten om dig själv och det som finns i just denna stund, i nuet. Olika studier visar att fler kvinnor haft utbyte av metoden än män. Jag kan inte låta bli att märka likheten mellan mindfulness och 1800-talets tankar om kvinnors psyke.»
Pousette viser til The yellow wallpaper, en novelle fra 1892 skrevet av amerikanske Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Jeg-personen i historien er en kvinne som langsomt mister forstanden og begynner å se ting i den gule tapeten på veggene i soverommet sitt. Gilman hadde selv hatt en lignende opplevelse da hun ble beordret til absolutt hvile på grunn av sin psykiske helse: hjernen hennes skulle ikke stimuleres på noen måte. Novellen kan samtidig tolkes som kvinnefrigjøring: først er kvinnen fanget i tapeten, men til slutt kommer hun seg ut og er fri fra mannens og samfunnets normer.
Klara Pousette (f.1989 i Sverige, arbeider i Oslo) er utdannet fra Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, med Bachelor i Visuell Kunst fra 2014 og Master i Medium- og materialbasert kunst fra 2016. Pousette har blant annet deltatt på Høstutstillingen 2017, ‘Kunsthåndverk 2017’ på Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum i Trondheim, ‘Tenthaus Spring Depot 2018’ i Oslo og Østlandsutstillingen 2019, og vist separatutstillingen ‘Den gula tapeten’ på Asker Kunstforening i 2019.

Welcome to Klara Pousette’s exhibition noia at SOFT gallery from Thursday, January 14th 2021.
Note: Due to the current Covid-19 measures in Oslo, no opening event will be held for this exhibition. On Thursday, January 14th, SOFT gallery is open from 1 – 6 pm. We then maintain normal opening hours for the rest of the exhibition period. The number of visitors is limited to six people at the same time.
The starting point for Pousette’s exhibition is the symbolic value in textile handicraft. In noia, she presents us with a series of embroidered works. Embroidery has historically been seen as a woman’s hobby and as a measure of femininity and female virtue.
Pousette has covered pieces of cloth with hand-made embroideries. What is interesting about them is the work process. She wants to show a contrast between the physical execution and the content in the works, which usually deals with the ‘back side’ of femininity. Her own depression and experience with the meditation technique ‘mindfulness’ have been central to the project.
‘When my doctor asked if I had tried yoga and mindfulness to deal with my depression, I was surprised; I didn’t think mindfulness was used in healthcare. Mindfulness is about focusing on being aware of yourself and what’s happening at any given moment, it’s about being “in the present”. Various studies show that more women than men have benefitted from this type of meditation. I can’t avoid noticing the similarity between mindfulness and 19th cen. ideas about the female psyche.’
Pousette alludes to The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story from 1892 by the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In this first-person narrative, a woman loses her sanity and starts seeing strange things in the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom. Gilman herself experienced something similar after her doctor prescribed a ‘rest cure’ for her mental health: her brain was not to be stimulated in any way. The short story can also be read as a woman’s emancipation: she is first seen to be imprisoned in the wallpaper, but by the end of the story escapes and is liberated from the norms established by men and society.
Klara Pousette (b.1989) grew up in Sweden and now lives and works in Oslo. She studied at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and holds a bachelor’s degree in visual art (2014) and a master’s degree in ‘medium- and material-based art’ (2016). Pousette has participated in (a selection) Høstutstillingen 2017, ‘Kunsthåndverk 2017’ at Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, ‘Tenthaus Spring Depot 2018’ in Oslo, and Østlandsutstillingen 2019. Her solo exhibition ‘Den gula tapeten’ (The Yellow Wallpaper) was presented at Asker Kunstforening in 2019.

Three works from the exhibition, noia I, II and III (2021), are sold to The Fund for Crafts (Innkjøpsfondet for norsk kunsthåndverk) and will be included in KODE’s art collection in Bergen.
