Malin Bülow og Elna Hagemann har kroppen som felles utgangspunkt i utstillingen på SOFT galleri. Bülow setter kroppen i relasjon til strukturer som arkitektur og firkantede, tilsynelatende rigide former. Hagemann arbeider med kroppen som performativt objekt i iscenesatt fotografi. Elastisitet og flytende masse møtes når Bülow og Hagemann tar i bruk gallerirommet.

Hagemann har til denne utstillingen tatt utgangspunkt i materialet tekstil og ut av dette produsert både fotografi og skulptur. I fotoserien “Still Life With Bottle. (A study of the light, colours and shapes in Morandi ́s paintings, while acting as a bottle).” iscenesetter hun seg selv i ulike positurer og kostymer, som et objekt i et maleri. Dette føyer seg inn i en lang kunstpraksis for Hagemann, der hun med både absurditet og alvor søker å nærme seg kunsthistorien. Fotoene hentyder til fastlåste og undertrykkende situasjoner som kvinnen strever med å komme seg fri fra. Hagemann har også produsert en større skulptur. Her ser hun på forventningene til både kvinnerollen og det tekstile materialet som noe mykt og bevegelig, og omformer det til hard plast. Formen opererer dermed i paradokset mellom utflytende og fastfrosset, og henspeiler også på grenseløse kroppslige tilstander. En mistilpasset skulptur uten ryggrad og føyelighet som ikke evner å holde seg på sokkelen.

Bülows verk utforsker elastisitet i forhold til kropp og bevegelse, og initierer en ambivalent opplevelse av rigidhet og fleksibilitet. Mjuk polygon, elastisk polyeder – ett rörelseexperiment mellan konkav och konvex er en fysisk kropp i gallerirommet som sitter fast i en rektangulær ramme på veggen via en elastisk tube. Kroppen representerer en forlengelse av bildene, samtidig som den refererer til andre kropper som ser på kunst i gallerirommet. På denne måten ønsker Bülow at publikum skal veksle mellom identifisering og tolkning. Koreografien til danseren inne i tuben er langsomme, utstrekte og repetitative, noe som gjør at verket ter seg mer som en levende, elastisk skulptur eller et performativt stilleben. Det semi-transparante stoffet tøyer kroppens mest naturlige grense – huden. Huden som barriere til vårt indre og huden som mellommenneskelig grense. 

Mjuk polygon, elastisk polyeder – ett rörelseexperiment mellan konkav och konvex vil bli aktivert av danserne Wanda Breistrand og Marte Bjørnseth Kristoffersen hver torsdag, lørdag og søndag fra kl. 13 – 15 i hele juni. .

Malin Bülow (f. 1979) har MFA fra Statens Kunstakademi i Oslo (2016) og BFA fra Gerrit Rietveld Academie i Amsterdam (2012). Hun har også en MSc i neurovitenskap fra VU University i Amsterdam (2008) og en BSc i molekylærbiologi fra Lunds Universitet i Sverige (2006). Bülow har blant annet stilt ut på Cosmoscow International Art Fair i Moskva, HI GORDON i Wien, performancefestivalen på Kunstbanken i Hamar, RAKE visningsrom i Trondheim, avgangsutstillingen på Kunstnernes Hus i Oslo, Hotel Pro Forma i København, Podium, Black Box og One Night Only i Oslo, og har vært festivalkunstner for Sted Søker Kunst i Ski.

Elna Hagemann (f. 1976) er utdannet ved Statens Kunstakademi i Oslo (1998 – 2002) og Kunstskolen i Bergen (1996 – 1998). Hagemann har tidligere hatt separatutstillinger ved Vestfold Kunstsenter, Akershus Kunstnersenter, Noplace Oslo og Galleri UKS. Hun har blitt vist på gruppeutstillinger ved bl.a. Kunstnerforbundet, Kunstnernes Hus, Fotogalleriet i Oslo, i tillegg til en rekke internasjonale visningssteder som Lidkjøping Konsthall, Sverige, Kunsthalle Lophem, Belgia, Grim Museum, Berlin og Lethaby Gallery i London.

Malin Bülow and Elna Hagemann treat the human body as a shared starting point for their exhibition at SOFT Galleri. Bülow situates the body in relation to architecture and rectangular rigid forms, while Hagemann treats the body as a performative object in staged photographs. Elasticity and flowing masses meet when the artists take possession of the gallery space.

Hagemann has used textile materials in her process of creating photographs and a sculpture for the exhibition. In the photo series Still Life with Bottle (A study of the light, colours and shapes in Morandi ́s paintings, while acting as a bottle), she stages herself in different postures and costumes, like an object in a painting. The series is the latest instalment in an extensive oeuvre that takes recourse in both absurdity and seriousness to critically examine the canon of art history. Her photos allude to intractable and oppressive situations from which women try to break free. Hagemann also presents a larger sculpture. Through it, she examines expectations related to women’s roles, also textile materials as soft and pliable yet transformed into hard plastic. The form thus operates in a paradoxical situation between flowing and frozen states, perhaps also referencing the possibility for unlimited bodily states. It appears as a maladapted sculpture with neither backbone nor pliability, barely able to stay on its plinth.

Bülow’s work explores elasticity in relation to the body and movement, initiating an ambivalent experience of rigidity and flexibility. Mjuk polygon, elastisk polyeder – ett rørelseexperiement mellan konkav och konvex is a real physical body in the gallery room, encased inside a textile membrane that is attached to a rectangular frame on the wall via an elastic tube. With this work, Bülow wants the viewing public to alternate between identifying with the subject and interpreting it. The choreography of the dancer inside the membrane is languid and repetitive, causing the piece to appear more as an animated elastic sculpture or a performative still life. The elastic material is slick white and thus acts like an extension of the gallery space and when enfolding the body, an extension to our most natural boundary – skin. Skin as a barrier to the inside of our body, and skin as an interpersonal boundary. 

Mjuk polygon, elastisk polyeder – ett rørelseexperiement mellan konkav och konvex will be activated by the dancers Wanda Breistrand and Marte Bjørnseth Kristoffersen every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 pm throughout the month of June.

Elna Hagemann (b. 1976) studied at Oslo National Academy of the Arts (Faculty of Visual Arts 1998 – 2002) and the art school Kunstskolen in Bergen (1996 – 1998). She has previously held solo exhibitions at Vestfold Kunstsenter, Akershus Kunstnersenter, Noplace Oslo and Galleri UKS, and been represented in group shows at (among others) the galleries Kunstnerforbundet, Kunstnernes Hus and Fotogalleriet in Oslo, in addition to several international art venues such as Lidkjøping Konsthall in Sweden, Kunsthalle Lophem in Belgium, Grim Museum in Berlin and Lethaby Gallery in London.
