Velkommen til åpningen av Runa Boger sin utstilling Black & White på SOFT galleri torsdag 23. november kl. 18:00 – 20:00. Utstillingen åpnes av kunstkonsulent Anne Wiland.

SOFT galleri har gleden av å presentere separatutstilling av Runa Boger som har vært en markant tekstilkunstner siden 1970-tallet og en viktig pådriver i fagorganisasjonen Norske tekstilkunstnere (NTK). Boger var blant annet styreleder i NTK da SOFT galleri ble grunnlagt i 2006. I kunstnerskapet arbeider Boger med materialbasert kunst i form av tekstile collager og tredimensjonale tekstilobjekter. Hun tar utgangspunkt i en tekstiltradisjon hvor formale undersøkelser av farge og geometriske former er bærende elementer. Grepet er enkelt og direkte, og det tekstile, stoffets tekstur og struktur er førende veivisere. Boger er opptatt av gjenbruk og resirkulering, og bruker ofte ull i kombinasjon med vegetabilske fibre. Det organiske og naturlig ustabile fascinerer og inspirerer henne. Materialene innfarges for hånd og bearbeides videre med blant annet blokktrykk, pensel, monotypi, pastellkritt, håndsøm/broderi og laminering. 

I utstillingen Black & White viser Boger en serie geometriske bilder i lite format kalt «Variabler». Variablene har ingen figurative knagger å henge opplevelsen av verket på. Variablene er variasjoner på enkle konstruksjoner av billedflaten med horisontale, vertikale og diagonale strimler av ull og andre tekstile kvaliteter. En grunnleggende abstrakt komposisjon er gjentatt med små forskyvninger i hvert bilde. Det handler om fargens muligheter og hvordan enkle striper med små forandringer skaper ulike uttrykk. 

I forbindelse med utstillingen på SOFT galleri utgir Boger en bok om eget kunstnerskap. I boken skriver professor Ellen Marie Sæthre-McGuirk om Variablene:

I de første variablene utforsket Boger sterke fargesammensetninger som rødt, svart, gult, grønt og blått, mens i de senere arbeidene har hun tatt for seg hvitt og svart. Hvitt er en særdeles vanskelig farge å arbeide med, hvor det å skape en dynamisk billedflate og variasjon i uttrykket samt få det i balanse, er krevende. Det vanskelige samspillet mellom den ekstremt matte ullen og den flate hvitfargen, utfordrer Boger. Igjen ser vi hvordan Boger går inn i tekstilmaterialet for å brette det ut og trekke det i retninger som vi ikke helt forventer, eller tror, er mulig.

Boken vil være til salgs i galleriet gjennom hele utstillingsperioden. Lanseringen markeres med en kunstnersamtale mellom Boger og kunsthistoriker og kurator Monica Holmen lørdag 6. januar kl. 14 – 15. 

Runa Boger (f. 1948) bor og arbeider i Oslo. Hun er utdannet ved Engelsholm Højskole i Veijle (1967) og Kunsthøjskolen i Holbæk (1968) i Danmark, og deretter ved Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole (1974) og Kunstakademiet i Lodz (1973) i Polen. I 2010 tok hun mastergrad i kunsthistorie på Universitetet i Oslo. Boger har hatt separatutstillinger ved gallerier som Kunstnerforbundet, Kunstbanken Hedmark kunstsenter, Risør Kunstpark, Kunstindustrimuseet i København, Tromsø kunstforening og Bodø kunstforening. Hun har deltatt på juryerte gruppeutstillinger i inn og utland, blant annet Høstutstillingen, Østlandsutstillingen, International Triennale of Tapestry, Polen og The 6th International Textile Competition ‘99 Kyoto. Arbeidene hennes er representert i samlinger som Kode i Bergen, Kunstindustrimuseene i Trondheim, Nasjonalmuseet, Norsk Kulturråd, Riksgalleriet og Oslo kommunes kunstsamling. 

Boger har utført kunstprosjekter i det offentlige rom og vært aktiv i flere kunstfaglige styrer, blant annet som styreleder i Norske tekstilkunstnere (NTK). Gjennom årene har hun mottatt mange stipender samt flere priser, blant annet Artistic Award i Kyoto 1999 og den første Tigerprisen fra NTK i 2020. Hun har redaksjonell erfaring blant annet som redaktør for tidsskriftet Tekstilkunst som ble utgitt av NTK fra 2003 – 2013. Hun har skrevet flere kunstfaglige tekster til kataloger, kunstbøker og tidsskrifter. I 2019 var hun initiativtaker og kurator for utstillingen Sonate av Irene Myran (1948-2019) på SOFT galleri.

Welcome to the opening of Runa Boger’s exhibition Black & White at SOFT galleri, Thursday, 23 November, from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by the art consultant Anne Wiland.

SOFT galleri is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Runa Boger – a prominent textile artist who has been active in the field since the 1970s and who has contributed importantly to the association for Norwegian Textile Artists (NTK). Boger was, among other things, the chairperson of NTK when SOFT was established in 2006. In her artistic practice, Boger works with collages and three-dimensional textile objects, using the textile tradition as a starting point and with formal experiments in colour and geometry as foundational elements. The strategy is simple and direct, and the textile material’s texture and structure help guide the creation process. With her keen interest in re-use and recycling, Boger often uses wool in combination with vegetal fibres. Organic and naturally unstable phenomena are sources of inspiration. The materials are dyed by hand and processed further with block printing, paintbrush, monotype, pastel chalk, hand-sewing/embroidery and lamination.

In the exhibition Black & White, Boger shows a series of small-format geometrical images called Variables. These have no figurative ‘hooks’ on which we can hang our aesthetic experience. They are variations on simple constructions of the pictorial plane, with horizontal, vertical and diagonal stripes of wool in combination with other textile qualities. A basic abstract composition is repeated but with slight changes in each picture. The theme can be said to be the possibilities of colour and how small the changes made to simple stripes can create remarkably different expressions.

In connection with the exhibition at SOFT galleri, Boger launches a book about her artistic practice. In it, Professor Ellen Marie Sæthre-McGuirk writes about the Variables:

In the first Variables, Boger explored bright colour combinations of red, black, yellow, green and blue, while in the later works she has explored black and white. White is a particularly challenging colour to work with because it is difficult to create a dynamic pictorial plane with variation in the expression at the same time as establishing balance. The difficult interaction between the mat wool and the flat white colour challanges Boger. Once again we see how she engages with the textile material in order to unfold it and draw it in directions we do not quite expect or even think are possible.

The book will be on sale in the gallery throughout the entire exhibition period. There will, in connection with the launch, be an artist talk between Boger and the art historian and curator Monica Holmen on 6 January 2024, from 2 to 3 pm.

Runa Boger (b. 1948) lives and works in Oslo. She studied at Engelsholm Højskole in Veijle (1967) and Kunsthøjskolen in Holbæk (1968) in Denmark, and thereafter at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo (1974) and the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland (1973). In 2010 she completed a master’s degree in art history at the University of Oslo. Boger has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo, Kunstbanken Regional Art Centre in Hamar and the Museum of Applied Art in Bodø. She has participated in juried group exhibitions at home and abroad, examples being Norway’s national Autumn Exhibition, Østlandsutstillingen, the International Triennale of Tapestry in Polen, and the 6th International Textile Competition ’99 Kyoto. Her works can be found in collections such as KODE in Bergen, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, the National Museum in Oslo, Arts Council Norway, Riksgalleriet (now merged with the National Museum), and the City of Oslo Art Collection.

Boger has created works of public art and has been involved in several committees and boards for artist organisations. She was for some years the chairperson of the Norwegian Textile Artists (NTK). Over the years she has received many grants and prizes, among others, the Artistic Award in Kyoto (1999) and the first Tiger Prize from NTK (2020). She has editorial experience, not least through having been the editor of the journal Tekstilkunst, which was published by NTK from 2003 to 2013. Boger has written numerous texts for art catalogues, art books and journals. In 2019 she initiated and curated the exhibition Sonate by Irene Myran (1948–2019) at SOFT galleri.
