Velkommen til åpningen av Tina Jonsbus utstilling Vorma på SOFT galleri, torsdag 25. november kl. 18.00 – 20.00. Kunstner Anne Karin Jortveit holder åpningstale.

Utstillingen består av et pågående broderi, en lydinstallasjon og en bok.

Boken Vorma lanseres 6. januar, og det vil arrangeres en boklansering og kunstnersamtale i galleriet.

Broderiet i utstillingen baserer seg på turer Jonsbu gikk langs elven Vorma i august 2018. Hun så seg ut motiver, og valgte trådfarger til det ved å sammenligne motivet med garn i trådpaletten hun bar med seg. Det ble til sammen 203 ‘motiver’ som nå broderes fortløpende bortover en rull med linstoff på 12 centimeter x 25 meter. 

Overgangen mellom prosess og resultat er ofte flytende i Jonsbus arbeider, og i utstillingen Vorma har hun jobbet med ulike medier – broderi, lyd, tekst og bilder – for å trekke inn flere aspekter ved dette arbeidet. Teksten Vorma, som også presenteres som lydinstallasjon i utstillingsrommet, går dypt inn i utviklingen av arbeidet og valgene som er tatt frem mot utførelsen av broderiet.

“Jeg snur rullen, legger den i fanget og drar enden mot venstre og ser kanten på endestykket som grensen mellom Mjøsa og Vorma, en tenkt linje som den under jernbanebroen. Det er startstreken for elven og det er startstreken for hørbåndet, og jeg tenker at nå er de koblet sammen i et felles feste, og jeg sitter akkurat her hvor festet er. Herfra kan stoffet rulles ut slik elven renner ned elveleiet. Jeg vet ikke hvor langt sørover elven jeg når å registrere farger, men jeg vet at lenger opp enn jernbanebroen skal jeg ikke gå.” (Utdrag fra Vorma)

Tina Jonsbu (f. 1968) bor i Oslo, og arbeider hovedsaklig med tegning og broderi. Hun er utdannet ved Statens høgskole for kunsthåndverk og design i Bergen (1997) og har en Ph.D i kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid ved Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, avdeling Kunst og Håndverk (2020). 

Jonsbu har stilt ut sine arbeider mange steder i inn- og utland, blant annet i Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall, Arendal (2020), Edvard Munchs Atelier (2019), Tegnerforbundet (2017), Kunstnerforbundet (2014), Trondheim Kunstmuseum (2013), Charlottenborg Kunsthall, Danmark (2013) og Porsgrunn Kunstforening (2008).

Arbeidene hennes er representert i samlingene til KODE (Bergen), Trondheim kommunes kunstsamling og Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Kroatia, og er innkjøpt av KORO (Kunst i offentlig rom) både for Norge og for utland.

We welcome you to the opening of Tina Jonsbu’s exhibition Vorma at SOFT gallery, Thursday, 25 November 2021, from 6 to 8 pm. The artist Anne Karin Jortveit will give the opening speech.

The exhibition features an ongoing embroidery project, a sound installation and a book.

The book Vorma will be launched on 6 January 2022, at which time we will hold a book launch and artist talk in the gallery.

The exhibited embroidery is based on walks which Jonsbu took along the river Vorma in August 2018. She found motifs and selected thread colours for them by comparing each motif with colours in the thread palette she took along. There are 203 motifs in all, and she is embroidering them consecutively on a roll of linen measuring 12 centimetres x 25 metres.

The transition between processes and results is often fluid in Jonsbu’s works, and this is also the case in the exhibition Vorma. She has worked with diverse media – embroidery, sound, text and images – thus bringing additional aspects into the project. The text Vorma, which is also presented as a sound installation in the exhibition room, delves deep into the development of the work and the choices made during the embroidery process.

«I turn the roll, lay it in my lap and pull the end out towards the left and see the edge of the endpiece as the boundary between Mjøsa and the Vorma, an imaginary line like the one beneath the railway bridge. It is the starting stretch for the river and it is the starting stretch for the flax ribbon, and I think now they are linked together in a shared grip, and I am sitting right where the gripping point is. From here the cloth can be rolled out the way the river runs down the riverbed. I don’t know how far south on the river I reach to register colours, but I know that I will not go further up than the railway bridge.» (Excerpt from Vorma)

Tina Jonsbu (born 1968) lives in Oslo and works mainly with drawing and embroidery. She studied at Bergen National Academy of the Arts (1997) and holds a PhD in artistic research from Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Art and Craft Department (2020). 

Jonsbu has exhibited many places in Norway and abroad, including at Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall, Arendal (2020), Edvard Munchs Atelier, Oslo (2019), Tegnerforbundet, Oslo (2017), Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo (2014), Trondheim Kunstmuseum (2013), Charlottenborg Kunsthall, Denmark (2013) and Porsgrunn Kunstforening (2008). 

Her works are included in the collections of KODE in Bergen, Trondheim Municipality’s art collection, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Croatia. They have also been purchased by KORO (Norway’s organisation for art in public space) for national and international locations.

The exhibition and publication have received support from Arts Council Norway, regional project funds for visual arts (KiN), and Notam (the Norwegian centre for technology, art and music).
